Iran Deal

The Trump administration is attempting to kill the Iran accord without getting its hands dirty by dumping it on Congress. On October 13th, President Trump announced his administration will decertify the Iran nuclear accord, punting the matter to Congress. By choosing not to certify the agreement, he forces Congress to craft legislation in 60 days. If Congress meets this objective then Trump has signaled he will not impose sanctions on Iran, thus saving the deal. But this action seems destined to fail by design, which would have a profound impact on national security, international alliances, and most dangerously, the escalating conflict with North Korea.
Congress must work together to craft legislation within the 60 day review period or the Iran deal will likely lead to the resumption of American sanctions. This would be a personal win for Trump and a largely symbolic gesture that will run counter to all the other nations involved in the deal, and have little real effect other than making the United States less safe and diminish our standing even further. In addition, the Trump administration is also grappling with a nuclear crisis in North Korea and any actions we take with regard to Iran will have a ripple effect with North Korea, and the consequences could be catastrophic. Congress must act decisively, and in a bipartisan way keep the Iran deal in place.

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from Dayton.

I’m calling today to ask that [SEN NAME/REP NAME] reaffirm the US commitment to the Iran Deal. The Iran deal is an important element of our national security plan, and by introducing new sanctions or blowing up the deal, we make our country more vulnerable to nuclear threats.

Thank you for your hard work answering the phones.
