H.R. 490 Heartbeat Protection Act of 2017 was introduced on January 12th, and on July 28th House Rep Mike Turner became the final Republican to co-sponsor the bill. Currently, the bill is with the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Constitution and Civil Justice, which is lead by the man that introduced the bill, Rep Steve King.
Banning abortion after a heartbeat is detected effectively bans abortion; it’s possible to pick up a heartbeat as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, a time when many women don’t even realize they’re pregnant.
“This bill amends the federal criminal code to make it a crime for a physician to knowingly perform an abortion: (1) without determining whether the fetus has a detectable heartbeat, (2) without informing the mother of the results, or (3) after determining that a fetus has a detectable heartbeat.”
