Under a bill introduced in March, HB 565, Ohio would prohibit abortions even in cases of rape, incest or danger to a woman’s life.
Think about that for a moment.
No. Exceptions.
But that’s not far enough for the Ohio GOP. The proposal would allow criminal charges against both doctors and pregnant women seeking abortions and would characterize an “unborn human” as a person under Ohio’s criminal code regarding homicide. That means abortions could be punishable by life in prison or even the death penalty.
Now, let’s be honest. This bill has zero chance of passage, and even less of enactment. Ohio Republicans are terrified of the coming midterms and legislative elections, and they are trying to drive their base to turn out and vote. This bill simply gives them something to run on. But that doesn’t make it less dangerous, and we should demand that our representatives spend their time and our money doing the people’s work and not shoring up their base.
